Editing Services
I am a confident, capable editor and I am comfortable editing both creative and technical work.
Content editing (also referred to as structural or substantive editing) is about making sure that the document as a whole is consistent, has a logical flow, and follows the correct style and structure. It may involve significant structural change.
Copy editing focuses on detail more than overall structure. It involves checking for appropriate grammar, spelling, and syntax; visual consistency in fonts, headings, figures and images, and page layout; and language consistency such as use of technical terms and abbreviations, capitalisation, hyphenation, and referencing.
Proofreading is for documents that are nearly ready for publication or submission. This primarily focuses on consistency and conformity with the correct style. Grammar and spelling, formatting, and final layout are confirmed.
If you are unsure what kind of editing your document needs, don't be afraid to ask! It's not always easy to tell what your document needs, especially if you've been working on it for a long time.
The following table shows how I generally price projects, although exact costs will vary based on complexity, project length, and timeline.
| Type of work | Standard rate | Student rate |
| Content editing | $90/1000 words | $75/1000 words |
| Copy editing | $80/1000 words | $60/1000 words |
| Proofreading | $60/1000 words | $40/1000 words |
The Institute of Professional Editors also has definitions of the different types of editing that you can refer to in your hunt for the right editor for your document.
